Did you know only 14% of Chicago Public School students graduate from college?
Now, I didn’t go to school nor do I think it’s necessary for success. In fact, I think there are some serious negatives that should be considered before diving into debt for a degree.
But the fact is college grads do better in a whole bunch of important ways. They tend to find ways of securing higher incomes, are more engaged in their communities and are generally more civic-minded…hell, data even shows that life-expectancy increases with education. And, of course, poverty, crime, incarceration, and unplanned pregnancy plummet dramatically.
With middle skills positions (those requiring a two-year degree or other comparable certification/experience) expected to make up nearly half of all jobs in Illinois by 2018, we have a hell of a lot of young people in jeopardy.
